Websites — more

I build websites directly from raw HTML. This has many advantages: greater security, faster load time and unlimited flexibility of content including ongoing updates and additions.

Websites made from templates tend to contain excessive amounts of code simply to modify the performance of the template. They also may contain numerous 'plug-ins' which are necessary to load html that is located on distant servers of unknown reliability.

None of this extraneous code assists Google in understanding your website and placing it in the search results.

Google is a monster: dishonest, devious, overbearing and generally difficult to deal with. The thing Google does best is to spy on you, so my approach is to feed the monster, and then it rewards you with top search billing.

Visibility

Though there are several search engines, in practice only Google counts. Unfortunately Google is unconcerned with anything except its own profits which are obscene. Google has been prosecuted three times by the EU and once by India. French authorities have raided Google's office in Paris and the state of Texas is pursuing legal action independently because the department of Justice investigation is taking too long.

Getting the best results from Google requires a thorough and realistic understanding of how the company works. Throwing money at Google in advertising is not the best approach.

Content & updating

Making use of Google's generic search algorithms is by far the cheapest way of getting seen in Google search results. Furthermore this method ensures prolonged visibility unlike paid for advertising which disappears as soon as the money runs out.

The two key ingredients are constant updating and substantive content. A website that is put online and rarely updated will soon vanish from the search results. Similarly, boilerplate or insubstantial content will be read by Google's algorithms and cause the website to be downgraded.
